Demystified
The piece has a rich history:
It originates from a piece of film music I wrote around 2004. This was expanded into a longer composition by Jeroen de Rijk, Frits Landesbergen and me for Jeroen’s solo album Moves 24/7, released in 2007, which I co-produced.
The jaw-dropping one-take piano improvisation by the late Rob van Kreeveld that opens the track is a studio moment I will never forget. For the original recording, piano, percussion (Jeroen) and drums (Hans Eijkenaar) were captured beautifully by Paul Pouwer at Power Sound Studio. Jimmy Haslip recorded bass in LA and programming, percussion overdubs and accordeon were recorded at my studio.
Fast-forward to 2026:
For the original release, the strings were synthesized. The Shared Sessions organized by BCMM were excellent opportunity to finally record the real strings I originally intended to have. So I did a new string arrangement and recorded the Dutch String Collective at Groenland Studios with Hans Ravestein engineering.
I also took the opportunity to created a new mix completely from scratch – it was a great pleasure working on both the old an new recordings by these great musicians. Final polish by mastering engineer Sander van der Heide.
